In Denmark I was born (I Danmark er jeg født), has text by H.C. Andersen and according to many opinions, it should have the status of Danish national anthem. 3 melodies have been written for the text: In 1850 by Henrik Rung, in 1926 by Poul Schierbeck, and in 1995 Sebastian wrote the one recorded here.
This beautiful melody was written by Claudio Mondeverdi (1567 – 1643) who stands as a transitional figure between Renaissance music and Baroque music, and he became one of the pioneers of opera. The text describes “the sweetness of unhappy love” and has become one of the best-known songs of the time.
This melody is written by Anthony Holborne (1545 – 1602), and typical of the dance movements of the time, it goes alternately in two-part and three-part time.
